Monday, January 12...Birmingham/Montgomery, Alabama

Today we finally got to sleep in! (Well, that means leaving at 8 am of course). We bussed our way to the University of Alabama-Birmingham where we had the privilige of meeting with students from the university and the professor: Mrs. Pamela King. A professor who knew alot about the civil rights, and gave a caucasian point of view to the mix. It was interesting to hear that her dad was a lawyer, and since her family would help out the African-Americans during this time..he lost the majority of his clients. They struggled through, but they followed true to their beliefs and didn't give in to the intense peer pressure of that time.

After meeting with students, getting interviews, and hearing from a historian/author who was part of the civil rights movement, we moved on to eat at their a la carte style eatery on campus. Believe it or not...sodexho. Same cups, same trays, same plates. We couldn't believe it. We sat with a few students who told us how alarmed they were with the 1 inch of snow, and how they would "just die" if they had temperatures like we had.

We got on the bus, watched a documentary on Rosa Parks, well, I took a little snoozer :) and then arrived at the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery, Alabama. The museum started with a 3 screen projection of interviews of people who rode the Montgomery city buses at that time, and how they were treated. We then moved our way into another room where the actual bus reenactment took place. We learned about the racist police officials, the rude bus drivers, and the appalled passengers of both races. After the audio presentations, we then moved through the main exhibit and saw various writings, signs from the actual stores, a re-make car of the church vehicles used during the bus boycott, and at the very end watched an emotional video of Rosa Parks receiving her congressional medal. What a brave lady...that's something for all those people who say that "one person can't do much". She proved that theory wrong ten fold.

Our day ended with some wonderful southern cooking at "Dreamland BBQ". We had the most down-to-earth waitresses who called all of us "baby". It was pretty comical, and after eating 10 delicious wings finished off the meal with banana pudding (a favorite down here).

I just enjoyed the hot tub...but now ready for a little sleep (and well needed).
Until tomorrow...
